“Spelling Bees offer students a unique opportunity to enhance their vocabulary and comprehension skills while improving their cognitive abilities. By learning new words and their meanings, students expand their language knowledge and develop strategies for understanding complex word structures.
Participating in Spelling Bees can help build a child’s confidence, public speaking skills, and effective communication skills. Competing in a spelling bee fosters resilience, teaching students how to handle both success and failure with grace while promoting a healthy sense of competition. Through this experience, students not only strengthen their academic skills but also develop important life skills such as perseverance, poise under pressure, and self-confidence.”
In Wisconsin, the journey to the Scripps National Spelling Bee starts each fall and winter when students in grades 3-8 participate in the classroom, school, and/or district spelling bees. The winners from these events move on to regional bees hosted by CESAs across the state, all affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. In March, regional champions from across Wisconsin gather in Madison, Wisconsin, to compete in the Badger State Spelling Bee. The top speller from this state-level competition earns a spot in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee.
